The integration of people from Ukraine into the labour market in Germany is progressing. As the current projection shows, the number of employed persons from Ukraine increased to 296,000 in November 2024, which is 230,500 more than before the start of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022.

Among those in employment, 245,200 employees were in roles subject to social security contributions. In June 2024, more than half of were employed as skilled workers.

Ukrainian workers are frequently employed in roles in manufacturing, retail, the healthcare and social sector, construction, hospitality, and in business services, which includes temporary work, horticulture and building management, for example.

In view of the demographic trends in Germany, many businesses are also interested in the potential benefit offered by workers from Ukraine who are available to the labour market now or will be available in the future. In addition to the 211,000 Ukrainian citizens in Germany who are unemployed, 98,000 are currently attending integration courses, 29,000 are attending job-related language courses, and 21,000 are enrolled in labour market programmes.

Overall, significant progress has been made in terms of the integration of Ukrainian citizens into the German labour market. Despite a difficult economic environment, the rate of integration for Ukrainian citizens more than doubled in 2024 and therefore performed very well compared with the overall average.
